As the group named “Giraffes”, when we were first introduced the project about the problems in education , a lightbulb appeared in our minds : lack of participating in socio-cultural activities due to more focusing on grades. It was really significant for us since the problem had been occupying our lives since the beginning of our education had begun. Hence, we decided to focus on this problem and come up with possible solutions.
We started with brainstorming about the probable causes behind the problem and we found some major items and we made a voting to ascertain the four major reasons. Then, we went on making a very wide survey online, containing four major possible reasons (student, family, teacher&school administration, system) to the problem to find out which one is the most leading problem for the participants. The result was not very sharp so we had to emphasize on all of them and we ended up having a lot of interpretations and thoughts about the problem. We also asked our participants to create solutions and we realized that every person has different ideas and they are all enthusiastic to change themselves (as students), change their families’ views, change their schools administrations’ negative attitudes towards the activities which the students want to participate in and finally, change the whole system. In order to overcome the problem which they all suffer from, the participants of the survey came up with ideas such as grading the participation in socio-cultural activities as well as classes which are taught in schools, giving lectures about role models who has been successful in real life rather than educational life and many more interesting and applicable solutions. Upon considering all those ideas, we created a list of feasible remedies and shared them with our classmates.
Above all, during our journey, we learned how to be united. Every individual in our group had a chance to speak up and explain their thoughts. Such kind of an independent and peaceful environment not only made us more self-confident but also more sensitive and productive towards the subject. The project also taught us that Giraffes wouldn’t be as successful as it is now if one of us wasn’t with us all along the project. Hence, we found out that every individual is as indispensable as being united is; that’s what makes Imece Circle Project so unique and beneficial in our opinion.
